The Need

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in Queensland.

Currently there are more than 100,000 men living with prostate cancer in Australia.

Queensland Health predicts that prostate cancer cases will rise dramatically in the next 10 years.

They estimate that by 2016 there will be approximately 5000 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year in Queensland.

Our Nurses

Specialist prostate cancer care nurses play a very important role in caring for men suffering from prostate cancer. They bridge the gap between primary, secondary and tertiary care and provide valuable advice, support and practical assistance to patients throughout the various stages of their treatment.

Prostate cancer care nurses will improve a patient’s quality of care by:

  • Serving as an educational resource for the patient
  • Providing information on the various treatment options
  • Coordinating and explaining the treatment process
  • Clarifying and reinforcing information provided
  • Providing continuity of care across multiple settings
  • Providing emotional and social support
  • Assisting with referrals to other specialists in the multi-disciplinary team
  • Working closely with General Practitioners, Urologists, Physiotherapists, Social workers, Dieticians and Pharmacists
